Rotary Club: Carlsbad Project Title: Pendleton School of Infantry 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Rotary Club of Carlsbad's satellite club - Rotary Camp Pendleton - is working on a project atthe Area 51, School of Infantry. Upon graduation from boot camp, every Marine is sent to the School of Infantry (SOI) for trainingand subsequent assignment based on the skills/capabilities they demonstrate at school.Approximately 25,000 marines annually cycle through this fairly rigorous training school. After the intensive training these Marinesneed a space to unwind and decompress. This project would build/rehab a "club-house" at SOI for the Martines to relax after a tough day of training. Joining forces withmultiple clubs in our district we can show support for our active duty military by helping them to create this needed space on base.An agreement is in place to note that a significant portion of the labor will be contributed by the Marine Corps. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 25,000 annually 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? To build/rehab a clubhouse for active-duty Marines during their rigorous training at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. 25,000 Marines cycle through annually to train at the School of Infantry. The project provides a place to unwind and reduce stress during training to promote positive mental health outlets and provide a place to decompress and discuss any needs for professional assistance. Area 51, School of Infantry:
• Upon graduation from boot camp, every Marine is sent to the School of Infantry (SOI) for training and subsequent assignment based on the skills/capabilities they demonstrate at school. Approximately 25,000 marines annually cycle through this fairly rigorous training school. After the intensive training these Marines need a space to unwind and decompress. • We know the impact of stress reduction on day-to-day mental health during the best of times. The intensity of the programs and training for our military extends well beyond what many experience. Supporting positive mental health outlets is one way to show our support, not only of our local Marines, but it also goes a long way to demonstrate our recognition of the internal pressures they face. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 20 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Actively involved in the planning, budget review, organization of labor/trades needed, project design, oversight of implementation and project management. In addition, Rotarians reached out to the community weekly discussing Rotary and the opportunities to join any club locally to assist in projects supporting positive mental health outlets/resources, such as this at the SOI. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Our Satellite club on base at Camp Pendleton was key in this project, providing assistance with day-to-day feedback, oversight/implementation and data for the feasibility of the project and its future success. 7.
