Rotary Club: Vista Project Title: Reading Is Fun Literacy Grant 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Rotary Club of Vista completed our first grade reading program in November 2023. Books were ordered and club members held a "sticker party" to place a club sticker in the front of each book. Club members read to 1,250 first grade students in 56 classrooms in 15 elementary schools in Vista Unified School District (VUSD), and gave each student their own copy of the book to take home and share with family. For many students it was the first book that they have owned for themselves. Included as an attachment to this report is the check to Dickerson Literacy Initiatives for purchase of the books. Also attached are pictures of club members reading to students and a picture from our club "sticker party." (NOTE: Because we were not able to secure photo relase documentation for these activities, faces are covered for all minors in the photos). 2. How many people benefited from this project? Approximately 1,250 first grade students in 56 classrooms throughout the district received books. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? All first grade students in VUSD are impacted by this project. They each receive their very own copy of the book that is read, to take home and share with parents and siblings (thereby further expanding the reach of the project). For many of the students this is the first book that they have personally owned. Early literacy is a primary goal of the Vista Unified School District and this project contributes to enhancing students' interest and skill developent in reading. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Approximately 12 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 1) Two club members coordinated the entire project including choosing and ordering books, creating and administering a schedule for classroom reading sessions, and preparing the books for club sticker insertion and delivery to schools. 2) Two club members handled all administrative functions associated with grant administration, funding and reporting. 3) Several club members and "friends of the club" participated in the "sticker party" and also read to classrooms and distributed books to students. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Vista Unified School District assisted in planning and impementation of the project. Vista Teachers' Association provided major logistical support for project planning and implementation. Also, the club was awarded a Community Reinvestment Program grant by the County of San Diego, part of which was designated to fund $3,500 of the club contribution to the project. 7. Income
