Rotary Club: Fairbanks Golden Heart Project Title: Teenage Suicide Prevention 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Fairbanks, developed its in-person Ending the Silence program that delivers high-quality presentations to local schools, staff, and parents. The presentations equip students, school staff, and parents to know the warning signs, coping strategies, and how to help themselves and each other. The presentations are shared by a NAMI-trained parent and a youth who have lived experience with mental illness such as depression. Students learn that it is okay to talk about their own mental health and how to get help. 2. How many people benefited from this project? The entire community benefitted from the addition of these funds to the NAMI program. Although this grant was the only source of funding, it helped train NAMI staff and promote the program. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? NAMI Fairbanks has been able to secure additional funding that will support a travel stipend for volunteer presenters who travel to deliver the in-person presentations. Funds from our grant have been spent toward the staffing costs for all the Ending the Silence program efforts and some funds were used for the cost of training materials needed for training the presenters. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Ten of our 13 members 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. We raised awareness of the Ending the Silence Program at our annual Golf Tournament. We all helped prepare for and staff the tournament at which NAMI Executive Director, Nenette Rogers, spoke to the participants. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? NA 7.
