District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2023-24

Rotary Club: Anchorage

Project Title: Cradle to Career

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The Anchorage Rotary Club previously partnered with United Way in its "90 by 2020" campaign. The current campaign provided additional opportunities for club members to engage in hands-on involvement and volunteerism. The Club's "Cradle to Career" committee, along with several community partners, including Alaska Public Media's Ready To Learn program, assisted Dr. Claire Hill, the principal of Mountain View Elementary with a bold and innovative vision for increasing the academic achievements of the students in this Title 1 school which is in the heart of a low household income community.

In short, Dr. Hill worked with partners to create a community resource center that provided free school supplies, backpacks, winter shoes, clothing, jackets, hats, mittens, and other useful items for children with high needs who attend Mountain View Elementary School. Rotary used the grant funds and raised matching club dollars to secure new -- not used -- items in the fall and winter at reduced costs while also encouraging club members and community members to match with these funds.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Well over 100 elementary students and their families benefited.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Children and families who attend and live in the Mountian View Elementary Neighborhood.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 20+

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians produced and distributed Rotary logo backpacks to all Mountian View Elementary students at the start of the school year. Rotarians then collected, purchased and donated robust cold winter clothing that included coats, boots, ski pants, gloves, and hats. In addition, Rotarians took up a collection of other needed items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other basic items for personal use.

Rotary invited Dr. Claire Hill, the Principal for Mountian View Elementary to speak to our club about the challenges faced by the students attending her school. She shared the strategies and efforts designed to support the students and families as she and her faculty worked to improve student standardized test scores in reading and math.

Rotary also partners with Alaska Public Media's Ready To Learn program and United Way's Cradle to Career staff to produce several family events throughout the school year including a spring break camp.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Alaska Public Media and United Way of Anchorage produced many student and family engagement activities that supported the teaching goals set by the principal and faculty. These In-Kind values are listed below.
