Project Title: Project Mercy


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Build a House in a Day in Cooperation with Project Mercy near Tijuana, Mexico, May 4, 2024 for a family in need.

2. How many people benefited from this project? The immediate family is mother, father, and two sons. Future recipients must first participate in building houses for others, so this provided an opporunity for them to do so.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were a very low income family in a rural area near Tijuana, Mexico. Their present housing was a ramshackle shack built from discarded materials. This is the first time they will have had a house with a door and a key. The humanitarian need met was providing decent basic housing with an outhouse for sanitation. Other families wishing to be future recipients must first participate in building houses for others, so this provided an opportunity for them to do so.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 16 Rotarians and adult supporters, and 18 members of the San Dieguito Academy Interact Club

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Erecting the house, including walls, roof, installing windows and door, painting, and providing a starter set of household items.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Project Mercy is the cooperating organization. They arrange for the pre-fab work to be done, including the concrete foundation, procurement of materials, and provide a construction manager and several lead workers.
