Rotary Club: Del Mar Project Title: Autoclave for Safe Deliveries 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Sterile drapes and instruments are essential to provide safe deliveries for mothers and babies. If these essential supplies are not available in a timely manner, mothers and babies may die. Unfortunately, these preventable tragedies have occurred at the University of Gondar Hospital in Gondar, Ethiopia because sterile drapes and instruments have not always been readily available for the thousands of deliveries each year, many by cesarean section. To meet this urgent need, The Rotary Club of Del Mar, partnered with Gondar Fasiledes Rotary Club and The University of Gondar in a Global Grant to create a Perinatal Laundry and Sterilization facility at the University of Gondar Hospital. ( GG2094220 “Safe Deliveries for Mothers and Babies†) During this grant, the Perinatal service encountered problems because there was no emergency back-up sterilization when the autoclave was offline for maintenance and repair. To address this problem, we proposed the purchase of a small electric pressure cooker-type autoclave that can provide extra sterilization capacity in emergencies and times of increased demand. This small autoclave is robust, rugged, and simple to use. Three c-section sets can be sterilized in 30 minutes. Our goal was to provide sterile linens and instruments for every delivery at Gondar University Hospital so that no mother or baby would die unnecessarily from lack of these critical supplies. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Up to 200 a month. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Mothers and babies requiring emergency deliveries at the University of Gondar Hospital. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Fourteen Rotarians participated. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians from two clubs in the UK shared their experience gained while working on other projects in Gondar. They introduced us to Tim Beacon of Medical Aid International who helped to plan and to implement the project. Rotarian members of the Rotary Club of Del Mar International Service Committee offered advice on planning a project in an area of conflict. Members of Gondar Fasiledes Rotary Club arranged ways to communicate when the internet was down and acted as liaison with the University of Gondar. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? We partnered with Medical Aid International, an NGO from the UK that supplies equipment specifically adapted to the needs of Low-and-Middle-Income -Countries. They have worked on several successful projects at the University of Gondar Hospital. CEO Tim Beacon helped to plan the project, to procure the autoclave and install, train personnel, as provide ongoing support. 7. Income
