District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2023-24

Rotary Club: E-Club of San Diego Global

Project Title: Enhancing Education in Liberia

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project provided a set of an educational kit known as SmartBox/SmartServer. The kit contains a SmartServer that also has wireless internet access. It is simply a digital library. Additionally, at least 16 (sixteen) laptop computers and accessories were provided to improve the educational experience of students and faculty at Foya Mission School, Lofa County, Liberia. The purchase and installation of a SmartBox/SmartServer is a game changer in the instructional capacity and learning opportunity for students & faculty at Foya Mission School. It provides abundant educational resources including electronic textbooks, programmed learning links, instructional materials, and alternative lesson presentation or learning options for both students and faculty. It is easy and suitable for mobility to rural areas, user friendly, diverse, and adoptable functions. The program provides opportunity for customization and upgrade to fit local needs or purposes. It is also useful in teaching, conference presentations and one on one learning. The project was implemented from July 1, 2023- March 31, 2024.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Approximately 300 students & faculty

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

This project is a great relieve to school administration and schoolchildren as they face challenges with limited financial resources. The impact is huge and will go on for years to come. It has created an environment where students can study and successfully pass both local and national school exams. It has directly impacted at least 300 students & faculty for this year and indirectly benefit thousands upon thousands of Liberian schoolchildren including many orphans and extremely poor children with little or no opportunity for education. It is a huge encouragement and blessing to the school staff and administration. The SmartBox is being use every day of school, and for many years to come. It resolves critical challenges faced by students in pursuit of their studies such as lack of internet, limited electricity, lack of library facility, and teacher shortage. It is a gift given by Rotary and its partners for the purpose of enhancing education and developing world peace through creating understanding between nations.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Five (5) Rotarians from the sponsoring club.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The sponsoring club Rotarians were involved in project planning and promotion, logistics and handover ceremonies. This included but not limited to the purchasing of the equipment and supplies, training, packaging and transporting of the computers and SmartServer kit to the beneficiaries.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The project included working with a participating organization (Destiny Hands International Inc.), a 501(c)3 located in San Diego, California which provided first-hand knowledge of the school needs and was able to perform an on-site verification of the project completion. The partnering organization provided funds to underwrite the cost of the remaining line items for this project. The collaborating organization, with assistance from its affiliating local Liberian organization, also coordinated and carried out the project and is responsible for any future maintenance needs.
