District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2023-24

Rotary Club: El Camino Real (Oceanside)

Project Title: Operation Hope Shelter NC

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Our club provided hot nutritious meals once a month to families experiencing food insecurities in a local sheltered for unhoused families and women. Operation Hope Shelter North County will benefit with nutritious meals, volunteers to deliver and serve the meals. Members are involved in planning, ordering, delivering and serving meals to the families. Each month we provided a meal to a minimum of 25 guests at the homeless shelter, including men, women and children.

2. How many people benefited from this project? a minimum of 300 individuals (25 each month for 12 months)

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Guests at Operation Hope are individuals and families with children who were homeless and have agreed to join the 3-month Operation Hope program. While at the shelter they are assisted with finding more permanent housing and job options. Children are cared for or taken to school, while their parent(s) find employment and make a plan to support themselves. Guests work towards self-sufficiency each day. Our support in providing dinner to them, allows them to focus on their plan instead of meal prep. Without our meal support, the limited staff and funding at Operation Hope, meals would be basic with little variety, and time would be taken away from the staff to help the adults with their self-sufficiency plan. The guests tell us we are supporting their goals by providing them with a meal.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 13: The coordination of the schedule and was managed by one lead Rotarian in our club , but each month a different Rotarian delivered the meals to the shelter.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Each month on the assigned day, a communication with the shelter manager was made to determine the number guests at the shelter, the number of meals needed and any special dietary requirements. We were able to accommodate guests with vegetarian requirements, vegan requirements, peanut allergy and lactose intolerance. Once the needs were identified each month, the Rotarian placed the order to WINCO for the food, picked it up, paid for it, delivered it hot and ready to eat, to the shelter and assisted with serving as needed.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Rotarian providing the meals worked closely with the shelter staff of Operation Hope to assist in assuring all the guests, especially the children were given a hot appropriate meal. The Salvation Army initially provided prepared meals for this endeavor but had to stop due to staffing issues. Our club then negotiated with WINCO, an employee-owned grocery store, to purchase the food.
