District 5010

2024-25

Rotary Club: Anchorage South

Project Title: 3rd Grade Dictionaries

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

All dictionaries were personally delivered to every 3rd grade student in the Anchorage School District, with few exceptions, by local Rotarians.

2. How many people benefited from this project? approximately 3,000 3rd grade students

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

3rd grade students were the beneficiaries. The dictionaries will provide the student with a tool they can use throughout their primary schooling and even into their college years. We have received feedback from students and family members that collaborate the fact that dictionaries made a difference in the scholastic achievements of many students.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? over 25 Anchorage South Rotary members as well as members from the Gatewood Rotary club, International Rotary Club, Girdwood Rotary club as well as the Elks club.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Each 3rd grade class is visited by one or more rotary members. There was a total of 74 schools engaged in this project. The visiting Rotarian would briefly provide an overview of what Rotary is and what kind of service projects we get involved in. They all review the 4-way test sticker that is provided as part of the project and assist them in placing the sticker on the inside of the cover page. They also have each student sign (print) their name on the space provided on the first page. A little instruction is provided on how to use a dictionary and how the dictionary can be used to find important facts other than simply looking up the spelling or meaning of a word. An example would be to look up the presidents of the United States in chronological order.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Elks club in Eagle River AK were involved in distributing dictionaries to nine schools in the Eagle River area.

The specialized 4-way test student version was purchased from Great Originals in Anchorage

The dictionaries were order from the Dictionary Project

The 74 schools involved included ASD Public, Charter and Private schools.
