District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2024-25

Rotary Club: Rancho Santa Fe

Project Title: Oncology & Kids Camp Supplies

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Oncology and Kids (OAK) is using the $6,000 grant from Rancho Santa Fe Rotary to help support three core sessions of Camp Reach for the Sky, scheduled to take place between April and the summer of 2025:

Resident Oncology Camp (ROC) - Scheduled for June 29 - July 5, 2025, at Pine Valley Conference Center in Pine Valley, CA.; Sibling Camp (SIBS) - Taking place in July 2025 at Camp Cedar Glen in Julian, CA.; and Day Camp - Set for June 2025 at the Girl Scout Camp in Balboa Park. Additionally, Camp in a Box will provide activities and engagement for children who can't attend in person due to their health.

With the funding provided, OAK has purchased essential supplies that will be used for camp programming, ensuring that children attending these sessions have access to therapeutic activities, arts and crafts, and remote participation opportunities.

OAK has invested $15,551 in supplies for the three camps, as well as the Camp in a Box alternative. Rotary's contribution plays a crucial role in covering these costs and is a key factor in making these camps a reality. (Please refer to the attached cost breakdown for more details.)

2. How many people benefited from this project? In the 3 sessions noted and our Teen/AYA Weekend Camp, we are currently trackinApproximately 420 kids between the ages of 4 and 19 years of age and around 141 volunteers.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The primary beneficiaries of this program will be children affected by cancer, including both patients and their siblings, as well as kids with parents in treatment and/or bereaved. These programs address the critical humanitarian need for emotional and social support, helping children cope with the isolation of a cancer diagnosis.

The funding provided by Rotary ensures that campers will have access to:

Talk Time reflection sessions, where they can process their experiences using activities like journaling, wish sticks, and art therapy.

Creative and team-building activities, including arts and crafts, shield-making, and the highly anticipated marshmallow fight, which help foster friendships and resilience.

Camp in a Box kits, ensuring that children unable to attend in person still feel included in camp experiences.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Still to be determined

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

OAK has invited RSF Rotary members to participate by attending camp sessions and engaging with the campers. OAK has also asked our Rotarians to be available to serve as mentors for some of the older teens and AYA population campers. RSF Rotary is also inviting the students in our sponsored Rotaract Club to attend. We hope that both members and students will come out to the Day Camp as well as participate in our Marshmallow Fight activity.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

No other cooperating organization was involved other than Oncology and Kids.
