District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2024-25

Rotary Club: La Jolla Golden Triangle

Project Title: WAPI Project 2025

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

WAPI stands for "Water Pasteurization Indicator". These wax tubes indicate when water is safe to drink, far below the designated temperature needed to boil water. Pasteurization occurs at 145 degrees Fahrenheit, far below the 212 degrees Fahrenheit to boil water.

The event itself involved several steps. First, we have to melt the edges of a PVC tube in order to seal the edge. Then, we drill a hole into the sealed edge. We place a piece of wax into the tube and slide a metal washer onto the tube. We then seal the opposite edge and drill a hole. Thereafter, we test to make sure that none of the wax seeps out of the sealed edges. Once it has been quality controlled, these sealed tubes have wires threaded through the holes in order that the WAPI can be hung from the edge of a pot or some sort of water-heating device.

Thanks to the International House at UC San Diego, we were given a space free of charge to make WAPIs. We were able to reserve the room for the entire day in order to craft WAPIs.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 859 people who will be recipients of WAPIs

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The work that we do for WAPI falls squarely in the "Water, sanitation, and hygiene" area of focus. Our beneficiaries are people in developing regions of the world where resources are scarce. Indicating when water is safe to drink, at a temperature level that does not require as many resources as boiling water, means that clean water is more accessible to all members of society.

Furthermore, needing less firewood or other substances in order to boil the water means that many people can pursue other tasks besides collecting firewood. This opens opportunities for many children to go to school or educate themselves, as they no longer need to spend many hours collecting firewood for their family.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 28

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

We had many Rotarian volunteers involved with the drilling and wiring needed to craft a WAPI. They were a crucial part of the WAPI-making operation, working side-by-side with the Rotaracters present to make WAPIs.

We also invited three Rotarians to present as speakers. One Rotarian described the impact of WAPIs after they are made and where WAPIs are sent. He also displayed a solar cooker that accompanies the WAPI. The other Rotarian presented about the creation of the first WAPI Project event and their Rotary journey. Third Rotarian presented how all Rotaract & Interact & Rotarian able to keep continue support this annual project and make more WAPIs every year, so more people will benefit from.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

We cooperated with District 5340 Rotaract and the Eleanor Roosevelt College Residential Life to help provide additional funding and volunteers for this event. District 5340 Rotaract made WAPI a district event, allowing us to advertise to Rotaracts across the district. We had many volunteers from other Rotaractors & Interactors in the district.
