District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2024-25

Rotary Club: Oceanside

Project Title: Oceanside Youth Development Pr

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Project Summary: Increase literacy and cultural development for children grades K-12 in Oceanside's disadvantaged Crown Heights area by providing books, reading and school attendance incentives, mentorship, leadership development, and a path to attending college.

There are four elements to this project:

(1) Elementary School Age Reading Incentives

(2) Mentorship Program for Middle School Age

(3) Middle School Age Reading Incentives

(4) High School Graduation and Advancement Incentives

Elementary School Age Reading Incentives

Laurel Elementary School and Mission Elementary School, Title 1 (low income) schools, both serve children in the Crown Heights area. Administrators from both schools have told us that some of their students have no access to books at home: their only exposure to reading is at school and with library books. With this Grant Oceanside Rotary Club funded the purchase of library books and reading incentives at both Laurel and Mission Elementary Schools.

Mentorship Program for Middle School age:

Oceanside Rotary Club's vision for this program is for Oceanside Rotary Club members and family members to take young people from the Crown Heights and surrounding neighborhoods who attend Lincoln Middle School to various chosen venues, which include college campus tours, thus providing them with exposure to educational, sporting, and cultural events that they may not otherwise be able to experience. One venue was available this year: a MiraCosta College campus tour, soccer game, and dinner at a local restaurant. Several members of Oceanside Rotary accompanied 6 youngsters; all participating adults were trained and vetted with the Rotary District 5340 Youth Volunteer Affidavit. Bus transportation for the students to the tour was provided by the Oceanside Unified School District. The youngsters, who primarily come from the Crown Heights neighborhood, were chosen by staff and teachers from Lincoln Middle School. Unfortunately, changing priorities within the Oceanside Unified School District meant that we were unable to conduct any other mentorship trips. Instead, we successfully restarted an Interact Club at Oceanside High School and funded Interact jerseys for those students.

Middle School Age Reading Incentives

Lincoln Middle School, a Title 1 (low income) school, serves children in the Crown Heights area. With this grant Oceanside Rotary Club funded the purchase of library books and reading incentives at Lincoln Middle School.

High-School Graduation and Advancement Incentives

This grant provided support to Oceanside High School graduates who participate in the Lifeline Community Services program designed for Crown Heights students: every year the Oceanside Rotary club donates funds to support the graduation incentives established by Lifeline - a lei made from fifty $1 bills. Oceanside Rotarians will participate in the award ceremony at Lifeline

This year the Oceanside Rotary club provided funds as learning incentives to Oceanside High School students in the form of restaurant gift cards. Some of the restaurant cards were given out by OHS administrators during awards luncheons for the students, with the rest of the gift cards being given out to underprivileged students as rewards for academic achievement. Several of those students will attend an Oceanside Rotary Club meeting along with their Assistant Principal.

Part of the incentive for some disadvantaged students to stay in school is the opportunity to play on a sports team at their high school. This grant contributed to Real Hearts Give, a local non-profit organization that provides support to disadvantaged high-school athletes to encourage them to stay in school.

2. How many people benefited from this project? All students at the school libraries (approximately 3000 students), approximately 100 students who recieve learning incentive awards, and up to 15 OHS graduates who receive the $50 lei graduation incentivs, and 6 middle school children who went on the mentorship trip

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Beneficiaries included students in the low-income Crown Height area of Oceanside, from elementary school throught high school. For example, Administrators from all the schools have told us that some of their students have no access to books at home: their only exposure to reading is at school and with library books, so this grant's purchase of library books has gone a long way to improving the education of all students in the Oceanside Unified School District. Adeministrators have also told us that students who have been on the mentorship trips demonstrate improved grades and attention at school. And the learning and graduation incentives (gift cards and $50 leis) have helped keep some of the Crown Heights seniors be motivated to graduate, according to the School Administrators and personnel at Lifeline Community Services.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10-12

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians try to befriend and engage the youngsters on the Mentorship trips, giving them a positive role model and someone to talk to and share ideas and feelings. Students are also encouraged to attend an Oceanside Rotary Club meeting where they talk for just a few minutes about their experiences, and some come to the meeting wearing their $50 leis.

Rotarians also participate in some of the awards programs and talk with the students about their educational plans.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Oceanside Unified School District distributes the learning incentives provdided by the Grant, and provided the administrator and bus to the Mira Costa College event.

Lifeline Community Services creates the $50 leis and distributes them to high school seniors from Crown Heights who graduate from Oceanside High School.

Real Hearts Give provides sports-related incentives to local students as encouragement to stay in school.
