Rotary Club: Solana Beach Project Title: SD Environmental Film Fest. II 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The purpose of SDEFF is to inspire awe, engagement, and social change between people and our natural environment. Its mission is to curate an artistic, educational experience that uses film to bring people together, facilitate knowledge exchange, and effect social change. It creates a unique, inclusive, and representative film festival focused on people, air, water, and land, which all contribute to the long-term biodiversity of our planet. SDEFF offers a platform for filmmakers from around the globe to present creative ideas, talent, and skills in service to the planet. Films that amplify unheard stories, highlight emerging talent, enhance access to unique content, provide new opportunities for learning, and build the environmental community within and outside San Diego. The 3rd Annual San Diego Environmental Film Festival (SDEFF) took place over 4 days in November 2024 with a music concert on Wednesday, 11/20/24 with local bands, a San Diego Green Drinks networking kickoff on Thursday, 11/21/24, Opening night on Friday, 11/22/24 at The Loft UC San Diego and an All-Day Screening Event & Environmental Block Party on Saturday, 11/23/24 at UC San Diego's Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts. Over the course of this 4-day event, almost 20 international environmental films were screened to audiences along with 2 discussion panels featuring award-winning filmmakers and environmental storytellers. SDEFF also hosted an Environmental Block Party on Saturday in between film screenings that brought together environmental organizations, nonprofits, artists, and sustainable vendors to showcase their impactful work in San Diego. 2. Almost 450 people participated in the 4-day festival to include volunteers, filmmakers, students, environmental organizations, musicians, and the general public. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Attendees and participants included: families, students, filmmakers, environmental advocates & scientists, environmental organizations, sustainable vendors, artists, movie goers, and more. Complimentary tickets were provided to students, filmmakers, sponsors, and more. The diverse selection of films shed light on pressing environmental concerns globally, while the presence of local organizations provided tangible avenues for involvement and change. In addition to educational booths, the event featured artists who creatively repurpose plastics and e-waste into impactful art and sustainable living educators who empowered attendees to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles. Overall, the film festival served as a catalyst for environmental awareness within the community. It was also a chance for us to influence a new course at UC San Diego that is teaching STEM students about environmental storytelling. The lecturer of this new course attended and volunteered with the festival last year. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 5. What did they do?
