Rotary Club: La Jolla Project Title: Keeping our Oceans Clean 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Project was to create, purchase, and duplicate existing educational materials that will be used by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Ocean during their Field trips to various coastal areas in La Jolla and San Diego. 2. How many people benefited from this project? approximately 1,000 students will benefit. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The direct beneficiaries are students throughout San Diego, who will learn of the importance of caring for our environment, both on land and in our oceans as well as learning various aspects Marine Biology and the history of the Kumeyaay Indians who once inhabited our coastal areas. For those students who have already received these materials, their awareness of these new academic areas, will serve them and those they come in contact with for decades and likely open up new areas of academic interest for them that may generate future study into these important areas. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 12 members 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Initially, the 12 met as a committee to review the educational materials currently being used by the Walter Munk foundation and debated the efficacy of the program as well as the program materials. After the 12 members of the Community Service Committee voted to fund the project, Two of the members met repeatedly with the Chair of the Foundation to discuss the most efficient manner to duplicate and create new materials that could be used depending on the age of the students. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Water Munk Foundation for the Ocean was the primary creator of the educational materials they used for this grant to self produce, print and collate the materials as well lead the field trips the materials have been and will be will be used in. 7.
