Project Title: Helping Children Learn


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Buddy's Backpacks supplies were collected and handed out prior to the beginning of the school year at Rio Seco Elementary.

Reading Legacies allows children to see and hear books read to them by their incarcerated mothers. This program occurs on a monthly basis throughout the year. Our volunteers are at Las Colinas

2. How many people benefited from this project? 1000

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Buddy's Backpacks - children and families in the local community were prepared for the new school year.

Reading Legacies - mothers and children form new bonds through reading, gives mothers another reason to complete their rehabilitation and get back home, literacy

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 25

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians collected supplies, assembled backpacks and distributed them.

Rotarians volunteer monthly with Reading Legacies, helping the moms pick books and recording the reading.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Santee Mobile Home Owners Action Committee helped organize Buddy's Backpacks.
