Project Title: Literacy Education Supplies


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Project: School supplies to support literacy education in Marsabit county, Kenya.

What was done: Purchased school supplies in Nairobi and Machakos and transported them on a two-day journey to Northen Kenya.

When: October 2024.

Where: The activities took place in a small town called Korr in Marsabit county, Northen Kenya.

This project was funded by Rotary District 5340 DDF and a matching donation from Rotary Club of El Cajon Sunset - USA, in partnership with CAV, Community Change Advocates and TIRRIM TRUST of Kenya.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Over 650 Students, 19 Teachers and 12 support staff.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Beneficiaries: Students of TIRRIM Group of Schools. Through the school, the students will receive very needed various school supplies. items like pens, writing books, text books, pencils, soccer ball, volley balls, basket balls, geometric and science materials, art work materials etc. The supplies were rushed to the schools just intime of the beginning of national exams. Students will experience improved academic performance and educational experience. Lack of school supplies need was met. The students are encouraged to tutor their young siblings when schools are closed and teach their parents how to read and write. This approach will impact literacy in both Samburu and Marsabit counties.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Eleven

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians: Fundraised for the project.

Two self-funded two trips from US to Kenya, drunk camel milk and promoted Rotary.

Provided project guidance and delivered the school supplies to Northen Kenya.

RC El Cajon Sunset wired funds and paid wire fees.

Created awareness for the needs of nomadic students and their education plight.

Provided project final report, documentation and pictures.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The CAV, Community Change Advocates and TIRRIM TRUST of Kenya - purchase items needed by the school and transportation.
