Rotary Club: North County San Diego-Route 78 Project Title: Gym Memberships for Survivors 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? We sent the check to the nonprofit Alabaster Jar Project and they purchased gym memberships at the nearby Planet Fitness for each of the women in their residential program. The director of AJP, Susan Johnson, negotiated with Planet Fitness to get a lower membership price of $249. which you will see reflected on the receipts. The names of the clients had to be redacted on the receipts to protect their privacy. Then a staff member, Cynthia, took the women in the AJP van to that gym every Friday to work out; this was part of their recovery process. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 5 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries were survivors of Human Trafficking who were in the two-year residential program at Alabaster Jar Project. Five women benefited from the project, although our funds only paid for four (the fifth was funded elsewhere) 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 1 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. I (Corie) participated as much as I was legally able to. The public is not allowed to meet the women in person or take photographs of them at the gym due to their past victimization, but I live with Cynthia, the staff member who takes the girls to the gym so I was able to hear first hand about what they were doing. There was one young woman who was resistant to going to the gym and Cynthia was telling me about what strategies they used to win her over. Cynthia is not allowed to share the names of the women or the location of the residence where they stay. She herself is a graduate of the program at AJP, so a lived-experience woman. The women in the program related much better to staff members with lived experience. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Alabaster Jar Project managed the program. 7.
