This grant budget will be used in the following Future Vision Global Grant Focus:
1. Economic and community development: Train 300 farmers and 8 agents on organic farming practices; set up 2 greenhouses to support medical clinic and a secondary school; micro enterprise training for 100 small business; build a 30 foot wooden bridge for school children; and build capacity of the local community based organization.
2. Disease prevention/Maternal and child health: build capacity among community health workers on common diseases identification and prevention; prenatal and post natal care; hygiene; and purchase of medicines for the disease treatment at Uluthe Medical Clinic.
3. Water and Sanitation: protect 10 springs and replace one well hand pump; training water point management teams; model latrine slabs for better sanitation; and promote hand washing.
4. Basic Education and Literacy: buy curriculum text books for English, Maths and Sciences not provided by the government to improve performance in 3 primary schools (Uluthe, Ugana, Hawagaya) and Uluthe secondary school. Also provide 2 gas cylinders and gas line for Uluthe secondary school for practical science.
The project is in rural western Kenya, 70 kilometers west of Kisumu, and serves a community of 8000 people working to improve on the quality of life for children and family; food security; schools; health; and water and sanitation. The goal of the project is to work towards sustainability through the greenhouses and micro enterprise development. The community has previously benefited from Matching Grants 63710; 64967 and 72325.
