This Global Grant is in concert with a Korean grant to fund pediatric cardiac surgeries in the Tribal Region of Eastern India. When a child is born with a hole in their heart, it must be repaired within the first few years of life. Otherwise, as a child grows, the heart grows, the hole will become larger and the child will die.
District 3240 received a Global Grant of $70000 in 2010 with two Korean Districts 3660 and 3630 for these heart surgeries. They found a mission hospital that would do the surgeries for $1,560. With that grant, they were able to successfully operate on all 46 children. Word got out and they now have a waiting list of 100 of these children. All the families are desperately poor and have no other hope. These children will die a premature death without surgery.
This new grant along with the second Korean grant will cover these 100 children and make the project sustainable at the same time. Each child will have a local Rotary club as a sponsor. These clubs must raise $200 for each sponsoring child. That they will do with a fund-raiser in the child's community and Rotary's name is spread through the community. The child's surgery is covered by the grant. The $200 goes into an interest bearing fund for future children, thereby ensuring sustainability for the project.
Besides, these children after getting rid of the debilitating disease become productive citizen of the community besides the surgeries give a big relief to the parents and stop the drain on their meager income. Thus making an improved family environment. We have seen from our past experience how a child who wanted to attend a school desperately but could not do due to his illness can now go to school and hence this project covers a part of the focus area of basic education and literacy too.
These children come from both India and Pakistan. Recent events have strained relations all three of our countries. Caring for all these children will go very far in Rotary's objective of promoting peace and resolving conflict.

Yesterday the project was closed with the final payment made to The Mission Hospital. The Governor, DRFC, Stewardship committee chairman, Project Chair and myself were all present. Total no of children who were operated out of the grant money was 47 out of which 6 children did not survive. We also could collect enough money from private sources to be able to do 16 more surgeries out of this privately sponsored money. So, in all 63 surgeries were done where as the application stated 39 surgeries only with the grant money. The final report will be submitted soon to the Rotary Foundation.
