Benefiting community will be school children particularly girl children in Karur & Theni Districts, Tamil Nadu State. Karur and Theni districts together have more than 120 government schools where more than 40000 thousand children upto 17 years are studying. Apart from these institutions many more private institutions are there. Children from poor families and from rural areas study in government institutions. This project will be executed in the government schools where the girl children are studying.

List of Schools

1. CSI Girls Higher Secondary School, Karur.

2. Uswathul Hasana Oriental Girls Higher Secondary School, Pallpatti.

3. Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Aranganathanpettai.

4. Panchayat Union Middle School, Ursukadai.

5. Panchayat Union High School, Sukkaliyur.

6. Government Hight School, N. Puthur.

7. Panchayat Union Middle School, Periyakulathupalayam.

8. Government Higher Secondary School, Cumbum.

A study in 46 municipal schools conducted by Action for the Rights of the Child (ARC), an umbrella organisation of over 30 city-based NGOs, revealed that as high as 48 per cent of toilets were in a poor condition. The need of this community is the proper sanitation facility. Students who are studying in the rural and semi urban schools are suffering a lot because of the improper toilet facility, which is the first and foremost reason for the contagious diseases. Many girl students from poor families drop out of school because of the poor sanitary conditions in schools.

Children face distress due to unavailability of toilets, unavailability of water shortage, poor sanitary management, stinking and broken drainage pipes, and lewd comments on the walls of toilets. The condition of toilets in both private and corporation schools is grim. The stink and filth is so much that children avoid visiting the toilets for long hours. This results in health problems. Similarly, several parents have complained that teenaged daughters don't wish to go to school, particularly during their menstrual cycle because of filthy toilets. This is a matter of grave concern as several children---particularly girls trend to drop out.

Even though Government has been taking care of the infrastructure of the schools, it couldn't meet out the every single school's basic amenities. It may be because of managerial reason or political reason. Many schools dont even have toilet blocks. The children of these schools use open area for their natural calls, which is not hygiene at all. Few schools have toilets constructed several years ago, with cement plastering & existing toilets are damaged / not maintained properly / looks very dirty / no water facility. In these schools, the children use the same toilets which lead to infections. The girl children aged between 10 and 17 are the most effected due to these conditions because they are matured, so few search for hidden areas, few hesitate to use open area, which will expose them to others, few hesitate use the toilets which are not hygiene condition, which will lead to infections & few children control them self from the morning to evening to go back home, which will also lead to diseases.

The non-availability of piped water supply in schools is a great cause for concern. Almost none of the rural schools are supplied with running water. Some in urban pockets do have regular supply but only for drinking purposes. Water for pour-flush toilets still has to be carried by hand. So, on an average, every time a toilet is used, water has to be lugged in buckets, plastic bath mugs or even empty soft drink bottles from hand pumps located at distances of 50 to 100 metres away.

It will be a great help to the young community, particularly for girl children, if we construct new toilet blocks wherever toilet blocks are not there and renovate the toilet blocks wherever it exists but not in good condition and provide running water facilities. The proposed plan is to build new toilets in the selected schools which are not having such facility and also renovating the existing one with proper water facility. The maintenance is the biggest question mark in the cement pasted toilets. So to make the maintenance easier and proper, tiles have to be fixed up. The schools have been identified and the needs are planned to address on prima facie basis.

Creating awareness to use the toilets properly is also one of the important part in this project. Students need to be oriented to maintain hygiene behavior and to help the management to maintain the toilets clean.

The involvement of the benefiting community is higher to maintain the provided toilet blocks. Since the unaddressed part of their need is going to get addressed, the Heads of the schools, teachers and also the students have shown their gratitude for the initial steps taken. Parents Teachers Association along with the management staffs like Principal, will involve in the execution to give orientation for hygiene behavior, to cooperate in constructing / renovating and to maintain the facility. They will support in choosing the location, model, supervising the construction / renovation, supervising the maintenance, and make sure that the students use the facility in a proper way.

Under the head of the institution, a committee of Parents and Teachers will be formed to monitor the facility, to protect, to create awareness, to give training & to maintain. Since the toilets will be constructed / renovated with easy maintenance way, the committee should monitor the running water facility. The head management will allocate funds from their regular maintenance & cleaning reserves from government. Cleaning and maintenance staffs will be appointed, system and records will be introduced for proper maintenance.
