This project will provide equipment to establish a critical care ward for mothers and newborns in a regional hospital that currently does not have such a capability. Its patients come from a population of 300,000 people, many who have to travel an hour or more to reach the hospital. If patients require critical care servies, they must travel over fifty kilometers to another hospital that provides obstetric and gynecological services. Because this distant hospital confronts great patient demand from local residents, Bahia de Caraquez patients must compete for its services after arduous travel and lost time seeking treatment. Bahia de Caraquez patients suffer avoidable illness and mortality rates due to the lack of a local service capability. The project will purchase necessary equipment to respond to critical OB/GYN/pediatric patients, provide training to hospital staff, and organize outreach and trainings for mothers about reproductive health, newborn care, immunization schedules and nutrition. This project can begin implmentation immediately upon receipt of funding and be completed within 90 days.
09/27/20--Additional funding of $1,000 was recently received from El Cajon Rotary Club. These funds plus anticipated rotary matching funds will be applied to: 1)compensate for inflation increases in the cost of the new medical equipment; 2)costs involved with the professional training component; and 3)costs associated with the preparation and implementation of the health education outreach to women component.
