Thirumaalpuram is a small village located in the Madurai District within the State of Tamil Nadu, India. There are estimated to be around 1500 households with a population of around 7000 people in this village, which is about 11 Kms from the heart of Madurai City. Women and children are about 65% of the working class population principally - laborers and farm workers.
Trash - both biodegradable & non-biodegradable has been piling up. There is no recycling infrastructure and this has resulted in degradation of the environment. Ineffective garbage handling system has meant indiscriminate dumping & burning in residential neighborhoods and agricultural/open lands close to water. This has resulted in soil contamination and unhygienic air and water.
The proposal is for a self-sustaining garbage collection, segregation and disposal - and the building of Sanitation faculties at the School. The Rotary Club of Madurai Metro proposes to set up such a system in the village as a model that can be emulated by other communities.
The comprehensive approach includes creating awareness among the population starting with the schools - essay competition, painting competition & debates regarding environmental hazards and culminating in a rally and parade of students passing through the streets with pamphlets that describe best practices.
