Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
The Great Lakes Area Conflict Center was founded by two Rotary Peace Fellows (graduates of University of Queensland, Australia) to support peace-building in northern Uganda, just south of Darfur, Sudan. The Center provides training in conflict avoidance and mediation to refugees who are just now returning to their villages after over 20 years in camps during bitter civil wars. This project will provide support for a training program directed at high school students and their teachers, with the outcome that a new generation of villagers will be able to maintain peace and build communities. The budgeted equipment and supplies will train approximately 1,500 individuals who will then receive ongoing support in their efforts to further peace building in their communities.
