Proposal Form

The target area consists of 40 small hamlets within 5 political sub-divisions in the Tiruchirapalli District of Tamilnadu, India - specifically Kallipatti, Mekkudi, Nagamangalam, Punganoor and Kuttapattu. The area is a dry, arid zone depending on rain, accumulated and sub soil water for agriculture and all other needs. The population is 22,707 (based on the 2001 census but now likely to be 25,000+.

WATER

There are 6 irrigation tanks and ponds in the area. These have silted-up and water inlets blocked, These tanks need to be de-silted and deepened by moving 2.73 million cubic feet of silt/earth. This will increase storage capacity by 35 million gallons, recharge the wells and raise the ground water levels. Strengthening the lake and tanks edges, cleaning the inlets and planting trees in the upper reach of the water reservoirs will create a watershed and sustainable supply. In addition, this will prevent the periodic flooding of the city of Tiruchirapalli during the monsoon.

WOMEN EMPLOYMENT:

Use of plastics is abundant in the said area that adds to the ecological degradation. It is proposed to buy semi automatic machines to manufacture acre nut plates, paper bags, plates and cups, which will also provide a livelihood for the women of the community.

EDUCATION

Providing schools with basic amenities like benches and desks for the students to sit and write.
