Project Description Region: South America Country: Ecuador Location: Pichincha Province Total Budget: $35,550 Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene View Online Proposal Form The principal purpose of this project is to provide potable water for drinking, food preparation and washing in five villages and three schools in Pichincha province in Northwest Ecuador. The seven thousand six hundred residents, including 900 students of the remote communities in the Andes mountains have little access to clean water. A recent survey estimated that only twelve percent of the families have access to potable water. The major source of water is rivers, streams and wells. The area has ample supplies of raw water, primarily from rain and snow, thus supply is not a problem. However, the provision of clean potable water in the area is a major problem. The project will install a chlorine-based water purification system at five small villages and three schools enabling the villagers to drink and wash in clean water. Food preparation will also benefit. In addition, the water will be used by students in the community schools. The project funds will be used to purchase and install eight small potable water systems. The components of the system are described in greater detail in the Project Budget. The project can be completed in 120 days from the time the monies are received by the Primary Host Partner.
