Our focus is female reproductive health specifically related to women with obstetric fistula (a trauma of birth canal injury resulting in urine and/or stool incontinence) in Liberia, West Africa. This will encompass equipping delivery room/operative suites and an obstetric clinic for prenatal and postnatal care for women in rural Liberia. For the women with obstetric fistula from prior births, we will offer surgical repairs and self-care support. Through this program, we will also provide training for nurse midwifery, medical and nursing students, as well as graduate physician residents in prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula.
In order to provide these services, we require equipping our clinic and suites from the basics of patient gowns, scrub sponges for the physicians, scrub sinks, stethoscopes, etc. to the more specialized equipment of overhead operating room lights and anesthesia machines. In case of emergency care outside the scope of our small facility, we require one committed ground ambulance to transport patients to the nearest hospital. As this is an under-resourced country, electricity is not available from a central location or reliable, therefore we require a high powered generator to provide electricity in order to provide care. With patients staying after surgery or delivery, we require a Certified Nurse Midwife to be present at all times. In addition to attending patients, this person will be able to provide prenatal and postnatal education including nutritional education for mother and child.
We will care for women regarding obstetrical and gynecological issues. As they return to their villages, they will spread new knowledge about self-care and nutrition to their community. Our goal is that from a few individuals there will be a ripple effect of reaching multiple villages and communities in Liberia towards improving women and children's health.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
As we near closing on the land sale, we anticipate breaking ground in February 2021. We will have the land surveyed. Also, a Liberian engineer will assist with drawing up blueprints for our building.

Please update your 5440 DDF request to match the request that is on The Rotary Foundation Grant Center Site. District 5440 uses matching grants to track and approve DDF, and not everyone has access to Grant center so it is important the status and funding matches. Thanks!

The maternity waiting home is completed and the grant monies have been instrumental in providing electricity to the site and medical equipment. Remaining funds are designated for nurse-midwife salaries, and the payout has been initiated with the employment of two nurse-midwives.
