Project Description Region: Africa Country: South Africa Location: Pinetown Total Budget: $46,550 Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development View Online Proposal Form Following our highly successful Grades R & 12 projects we wish to extend our methods to the rest of the Grades by training unemployed Community Members in a Marketable, education related, skill on condition that they pass on this training, to their Community, for a 1 year period (during which period we will pay them US$1,50 towards their expenses). South Africas' education system is in serious trouble- National averages- 71% of Children entering Grade R have never had Preschool experience (In one year we reduced this, in our area, to 11,6%), Grades 3 & 6 have only a 30% pass rate in numeracy & Literacy, there is a 60% 'drop-out' rate between Grades R & 12, (we improved the Grade 12 pass rate, in 'our' two High Schools by nearly 200 & 300%, IN ONE YEAR), etc. The Department of Education & the Community fully support this project. We will train 21 Volunteers & provide them with the requisite Equipment. We will, also, introduce 'Leadership' programs in Social & Sports fields. A rudimentary Engineering Classroom will also have new equipment purchased. (Government was impressed by our project that they are training additional staff using our project as model. 16-Jun-14 Funds are continuing to be disbursed. 20-Jul-14 by Jim O'Meara Due to the re-valuation of currency, and through contacts with TRF, additional monies are being added to our grant due to the currency exchange rate. 10-Sep-14 by Jim O'Meara GG1326279 Interim Report 11th month progress report filed with TRF.
