Project Description Region: Central America Country: Nicaragua Location: Ciudad Sandino Total Budget: $41,595 Area of Focus: The environment The primary need identified for this project is the lack of nutritious food for low-income people in Nicaragua, many of whom suffer from diabetes. Following up on a very successful project to install 57 aquaponics units in rural and urban backyards as well as schools in the region of Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua, there is now a waiting list of 60 families wanting to receive a unit. An aquaponics system consists of a fish tank in which to grow tilapia fish and a connected vegetable garden. The dirty water from the fish tank gravity flows into the vegetable garden, nourishing the vegetables, and filters through where the cleaned water is recycled back by pump to the fish tank. The combination of fish and vegetables provides regular nutritious food for adults and children in the communities served. The funds will cover the costs of materials used and training community members to operate and maintain the systems. We hope to begin the project early in 2024 which will last one to two years.
