Access to proper sanitation facilities is a basic human right that is often overlooked, especially in developing countries like Nepal. Lack of access to clean and safe toilets can have serious health implications, particularly for girls and women. In many schools in Nepal, there is a significant shortage of toilet facilities for girls, which can lead to discomfort, embarrassment, and even dropout rates. This proposal aims to address this issue by advocating for the construction of girls' toilets in schools across Nepal.
Twenty percent of government schools (Community Schools) lack improved water and sanitation facilities, with an additional 19 percent lacking separate toilets for girls and boys and menstrual hygiene management facilities-UNICEF Nepal. Maintaining proper hygiene and sanitation is very important during menstruation.
Shree Satyadevi Secondary School is located in Kalikot District of Nepal, a very remote part of Nepal. It has 350 students out of which 205 are female and 145 are male. There are 1 toilet & 4 toilets for both male and female students. According to the WHO, for every 25 students there must be one toilet this means there must be 8 toilets for females and 6 toilets for males.
Janata Secondary School is located in Kattari Municipality of Nepal. It has 525 students out of which 312 are female and 213 are male. There are 3 toilets each for male and female students. According to the WHO standard, there must be 12 toilets for female students and 9 toilets for male students. Local government is making new toilet for the male student.
The level of sanitation is not at the standard level prescribed by WHO. Lack of toilets, especially for girls, discourages them from going to school. The condition becomes worse during menstruation for the girls. Even girls are compelled to make toilets in bushes or nearby houses which bring more bad smells and are prone to many airborne diseases.
Objectives of the project
Objectives:
1. Improve access to clean and safe toilet facilities for students in schools across Nepal.
2. Reduce rates of absenteeism and improve academic performance by providing proper sanitation facilities.
3. Raise awareness about the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices among students, teachers, and the community.
4. Promote gender equality by ensuring that toilet facilities are accessible and safe for both male and female students.
This project aimed to build two girls toilet that includes 12 rooms RCT Toilet with Incineration and 8 rooms RCT Toilet with Incineration . Incineration is for disposal of sanitary pads in schools. Besides, construction of toilets , this project include the training on waster and sanitation, basic health hygiene and menstrual health hygiene.
Rotary Club of Dhulikhel will implement the project including financial management , monitoring and evaluation .
