Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Argentina

Location: L. Hermosa, Bs. Aires

Total Budget: $31,600

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

GLOBAL GRANT N° GG2454187 "RISING LIFE EXPECTANCY IN OUR COMMUNITY"

PRIMARY OBJETIVES OF THE PROJECT

The objective of the project is to provide Dr Bocalandro Hospital -located in the district of 3 de Febrero, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina- with modern equipment for its Pathological Anatomy Service.

A Cryostat will be donated to facilitate the task of intra-surgery diagnosis in order to determine whether the resection edges of a piece are free or compromised by a tumor in oncological surgeries, thus allowing complete resection of the lesion. This is very important in breast surgeries and also at evaluating the total resection of tissues of endometrial cancer. This is also true when treating dermatological lesions.

The main beneficiaries will be patients who undergo surgeries, especially those related to cancerous or suspected cancerous lesions, since they will have faster and more accurate diagnoses and less risk of needing second surgeries.

NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY THAT THE PROJECT WILL ADDRESS

The project seeks to provide quality care to those who attend this hospital which is public and free. Due to the economic crises in Argentina, the peripheral area of the City of Buenos Aires -where the Bocalandro Hospital is located- was seriously affected, making it very difficult either to renew or repair equipment in public hospitals.

Moreover, around 4,000 surgeries are performed at hospital each year.

A cryostat is essential to produce a good quality intra-surgery diagnosis in order to make sure that the resection edges of a piece are free or compromised by tumoral tissues in oncological surgeries, allowing complete resection of the lesion.

To sum it up, if we take into account that most of the patients who attend this hospital are low-income informal workers, the fact of undergoing a second surgery -beyond the risks that all surgery entails- would find themselves facing work-transfers and loss of their day-to-day income, considerably deteriorating their life quality and that of their families.

For this reason, it is of vital importance for the hospital and its patients to have this equipment.

We invite you all to collaborate and be part of this project to improve the quality of life of cancer patients in our community.
