GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT PROPOSAL
By - Rotary Club of Shegaon (Club ID 87696)
Project Name
Widening & Deepening of 2 kms of Unad Naala at Yeulkhed
Unad Nala carries the unabsorbed surface water of Shegaon City as well as sewerage of Shegaon City
to some extent. This Nala flows from Shegaon to Kalkhed to Yeulkhed and finally merges into bigger
Nala (which comes from Khamgaon), which finally merge in Purna River.
Geographical Location
Yeulkhed is located in Taluka Shegaon, District Buldhana, Maharashtra. It is situated approx. 12 kms
from Shegaon Railway Station. Google Location of proposed site is 20.879986354091663,
76.65252570875955
Soil, Climatic & Socio Economic Condition of the Proposed Site
The site falls under draught affected Vidarbha Region with serious history of farmer suicides and
known for acute water scarcity. This is also industrially backward district of Maharashtra and
economic condition of the surrounding villages is heavily dependent on non irrigated agriculture. So,
people generally take 1 crop or max 2 crops with high risk of failure of 2nd crop.
Average Rainfall is 931 mm annual. Temp ranges from 13 Deg Celsius in winter to 47 Degree Celsius
in Summer. Bore water is generally available at depths of 400-600 ft with High TDS of upto 3000.
The area is blessed with rich BLACK SOIL upto 15 - 25 feet and below that there is "Chopan" soil
which doesn't allow percolation of water. In the Unad Nala, this Chopan Soil is available at around 5
feet depth and hence this is very good for water storage.
Project Description -
Unnad Naala flows for around 4.5 kms from Kalkhed till Yeolkhed and further where it meets Farsi
Naala. Out of this 4.5 kms stretch, the self sufficient farmers, who owned land on the banks of Naala,
have already deepened around 2 kms stretch of Naala using their own resources. They are using the
water for 2nd crop and to some extent for 3rd crop as well. Widening and deepening of balance
stretch is being proposed.
We are proposing "Doh" model or similar. "Doh" Model is basically digging a pit of 300 feet length,
approx 10 feet deeper than the regular stream level and then leaving a patch of say 100 feet at the
existing depth. Such "Doh" of 300 ft length x 15 ft wide (Avg) x 10 ft deep can store upto 1260000
ltrs of water. Such 15 "Dohs" can be dug within a span of 2 kms which will store about 1.89 Crores
ltrs of water.
"Doh" will be Dug using Excavator and mud thus removed shall be carried using Tractor - Trollies to
nearby farms thereby levelling their contours and avoiding flooding during rainy seasons.
Benefits of Project -
1. Storage capacity of Water around 1.89 Crore Ltr - Water will be used for irrigation and cattle
feeding
2. As the source of water includes unabsorbed water from Shegaon City as well as sewerage of
Shegaon City, water flows in Unad for almost upto the month of April beginning. So, the
storage is expected to be replenished multiple times - thereby better utilization of created
storage facility.
3. Levelling of nearby fields - better yields due to silt and lesser loss during rainy season
flooding
4. Sure improvement in yields of Rabi Crops of beneficiary farmers & possibility of 3rd crop for
some of them
Quantum of Benefit
Population of Yeulkhed as per 2011 Census was 955 (233 families). This size is expected to be around
1100 as on date. Approx 80 farmers have their farms on the banks of Unad. Thus, the number of
direct beneficiaries will be around 400.
In addition, indirect beneficiaries like neighbouring farmers, cattle, birds, etc will also be benefitted.
Farmers who receive the silt will be additional beneficiary.
Rotary Areas of Focus covered by this Project -
1. Water & Sanitation
Project Cost & Funding Plan -
Estimated costs are as follows -
1. Excavator cost - Rs. 2000/- per hour x 950 Hrs = 19,00,000/-
2. Trolley Cost - 950 Hrs x 20 Trolleys/ Hr x 100/- per trolley = 19,00,000/-
3. Less: Appr 5000 Trolleys may be taken away by farmers in their own tractors = (5,00,000/-)
4. Supervision Cost by Rotary Club of Shegaon - NIL
Nett Estimated Cost of the Project = Rs. 33,00,000/-
Sources of Funds as follows -
Rotary Club of Shegaon - Rs. 9,90,000/-
Global Grant Fund (from various sources) - Rs. 23,10,000/-
Conclusion -
Rotary Club of Shegaon has arranged the donors and funds for its contribution towards this project.
As similar work has been done by some farmers on same Unad Nala, the experience of those
farmers as well as confidence of beneficiary farmers is easily available for this project. This will
ensure smooth and speedy execution with full local support of the community.
Considering above points i.es financial resource mobilization by the club and surety of proper
execution, Rotary International and Rotary Dist 3030 are kindly requested to take this proposal for
positive consideration.
