Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Egypt

Location: Qift, Qena

Total Budget: $36,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Most of Egyptian villages are covered with Potable water networks that are built & operated by the government, through The Holding Company for Drinkable water & Sanitation and its branches in each governorate. Unfortunately, the increase of population over the years (2.6% / year) and the shortage of Governmental funds to increase the capacities of the water stations by the same rate led to the shortage of fresh water in the villages located towards the end of the water networks. The Government approached NGOs - including Rotary in Egypt - to assist in providing River Bank Filtration (RBF) wells to face the shortage of freshwater supply for those villages. Over the past few years the Rotary clubs responded by sponsoring several successful clubs GG RBF projects, serving hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries.

The chosen area of this project is "Qift" in "Qena" Governorate, located 600 km South of Cairo, and with high poverty level and bad need for freshwater. The project aims to provide 2 RBF stations to provide fresh water for about 34,500 persons, as well as training of 10 technicians & awareness to the served communities.

The total budget of the project is $36,000, and the number of beneficiaries is 34,000 person. ($31,250 for the wells, $2,500 for training & $2,250 for awareness), part of the direct cost will be carried by the local partner, and all overheads by the host club.

The project will start right after the funds are available and will take 3 months to be completed. Once completed, the ownership will be transferred to the local partner "Qena Drinkable Water & Sanitation Co" (QDWSC), who will operate the wells and pump water to the deprived houses for a small consumption fee, measured by a water meter in every house. The returns of the fee will be used for covering the costs of operation & maintenance.

The Host club will sign the MOU with the Local Partner, open a bank subaccount for the project, receive and disburse the funds, visit the village and follow up the project progress in regard of the wells, the training and the awareness, as well as reporting to TRF and to the International Partner.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
