Sarah Arebu Tahir Foundation (SATF) is a registered nonprofit in the state of California, USA, founded in 2021 by individuals of the Ethiopian diaspora, residing in Sacramento and Rotarian (Roseville, Ca). The foundation was formed in memory of their late nine-year-old child whose dream was to be a teacher. As per bylaws, the foundation is governed by seven members of a board of directors. We envision working with needed partners and stakeholders in an effort to improve access to quality education in holistic approach for deprived communities in Ethiopia to break the cycle if poverty. After having established a 501c(3) nonprofit status, we began the first steps by identifying an underprivileged community to implement an integrated package of comprehensive educational service as our first project.

We selected Jema Nigus Primary School, located in the Albuko Woreda (district), in the South Wollo Zone of the Amhara National Regional State (ANRS) of Ethiopia based on predetermined selection criteria. The first fundraising was initiated with a goal of $98,000 dollars and 70,000 dollars worth all school furniture sponsored. We established a local committee of seven people consisting of prominent local individuals, religious leaders, educators, local officials, and women pillars of the community. We want to thank and acknowledge Partner in Education Ethiopia, which is a local non-profit organization based in Ethiopia, that has graciously partnered with us to successfully accomplish this task.

Partner in Education Ethiopia [PIEE] has a holistic approach to building schools. Their efforts include assessing students' educational status, tracking their progress, training teachers, installing libraries and e-learning platforms, monitoring Water-Hygiene-Sanitation (WAS & MHM), and above all, establishing green areas where students can grow fruits, and crops for fulfillment of their nutritional needs and if surplus permits, to assist with the school's budget.

PIEE along with local committee and government discussed the role of each party. The community pledged to cover 20% of total cost. the local government donated 1.9 hectare of land and pledged to cover administrative cost. PIEE takes responsibility as mention above. Sarah Arebu Tahir foundation pledged to cover the 80% of the cost.

In order the project to be successful and sustainable, Sarah Arebu Tahir Foundation believe that holistic approach is a must. all stake holder to play part and for student to have source of income and sustainable nutrition through green area, which will have positive influence the community and nation at large by breaking the cycle to poverty.
