Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Agulurude Health Center

Total Budget: $30,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Agulurude Health Center IV has a catchment population of 63,000. It serves 650 in and out patients on daily basis. The hospital delivers 30 babies a day and is ranked as the highest serving facility in the district. In a report released by the ministry of Heath and Oyam District Health Officer in 2023, the number of child mortality among new born has risen from 250 to 380 per year which is due to lack of newborn intensive care equipment. Creating an Newborn & Premature Intensive Care Unit with Teriary Care facilities will be a Big help to those children born Prematurely and Newborn who require special Care Infant to reduce mortality rate from about 150 per 1000 live births to 20 per 1000 and to save the children. Oyam has the poorest people in the country and 75% of pregnant women cannot afford the High Cost of specialized tertiary care in corporate hospitals thus we need to create the same facilities for the underprivileged and poor population. Agulurude Health Center is centrally located with all infrastructure for Pregnancies & deliveries for really poor Females and the Children born thereof would be really needy. Malnutrition in Women causes Intrauterine Growth retardation, Premature births and New born Abnormalities. These all can be tackled with ease and expertise. Agulurude has well-built units for installation of the Intensive Care Unit with Teriary Care facilities, They have clinicians and trained Nurses to look after the NICU and shall utilize their own government of Uganda primary health care fund to maintain and run the NICU/ PBU. The 12 months projects will procure, install and train health management committees on maintenance and operations of the equipment. Club members conducted needs assessment and consultations with community members to understand their challenges and priorities. Members of the Rotary Club of Lira Metropolitan has been part of the planning process to ensure that the project is culturally appropriate, relevant, and sustainable. We later liaised with other Rotary Clubs and encourage their participation in program activities including workshops, resource mobilization and training where community and members learn and share ideas and co design programs. We continuously gather input from club members and community about the project effectiveness, challenges, and areas for improvement. This helps ensure we remain relevant
