Aegean Region of western Anatolia is one of the seven official geographical regions in Turkey and is composed of eight cities and a population of more than 11 million.
One of the leading universities in the region is Ege University, whose Faculty of Dentistry and its Department of Prosthodontics also serve as part of the state-run university hospital with its technical facilities.
Around 200 patients/year affected by congenital and/or acquired jaw and/or face defects, and presenting abnormal appearances or speech or chewing/swallowing disabilities applied for treatment.
The treatments are currently done by manually prepared molds, which, due to form inaccuracies (potentially up to millimeters), result in misfits, discomfort and eventual rejection/failure of treatment.
Our Project is to donate modern equipment to the Department of Prosthodontics to allow for precision scanning of the defect area and its surroundings. The scan data can then be transferred to the computer to obtain a virtual cast.
With the help of the CAD/CAM system and the 3D printer, a prosthesis can then be designed on the virtual cast and manufactured with the desired materials.
