Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Peru

Location: Tambogrande Piura

Total Budget: $131,330

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

1. Identification of the Need

Maternal mortality is a public health issue that reflects living conditions, access to medical care, and the healthcare system's ability to respond to obstetric emergencies. In Peru, the maternal mortality rate in 2023 was 55.9 per 100,000 live births, with the regions of Puno, Cajamarca, Huánuco, Lima, Loreto, and Piura reporting the highest rates.

Within Piura, the district of Tambogrande has recorded the highest number of maternal deaths in recent years. According to the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) of Piura, from 2020 to 2024, Tambogrande has had the highest maternal mortality rates in the region.

The main causes of these deaths have been:

Postpartum hemorrhage

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

Lack of access to timely and quality obstetric care

A critical factor in this situation is that none of the 24 healthcare facilities in the Tambogrande Micro-Network meet 90% of the Obstetric and Neonatal Functions (FON) required by the Ministry of Health (MINSA). This deficiency prevents effective maternal and neonatal emergency care, putting the lives of pregnant women and newborns at risk.

2. Proposed Solution

To address this issue, the Rotary Club Miraflores will implement the project "Strengthening Maternal and Infant Care in Tambogrande Health Centers: Equipment to Save Lives." The goal is to provide essential medical equipment to these facilities, enhancing their capacity to respond effectively and ensuring better care for pregnant women and newborns.

This project will directly contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages," particularly the target of reducing maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.
