In Huaraz, Peru, mental health services face significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, a lack of trained healthcare professionals, and limited community awareness about emotional well-being. High rates of domestic violence (46%), anxiety and depression (43% unrecognized), and suicide risk (25% of adults with suicidal thoughts) highlight the urgent need for comprehensive mental health interventions.
This project, "Rotary Club Huaraz: Allies for Mental Health," will address these needs by renovating and equipping mental health consultation rooms and auditoriums, providing continuous training for healthcare professionals, and implementing community education programs to raise awareness and reduce stigma. The project will run over 12 months, divided into phases: assessment and planning (months 1-2), infrastructure improvements (months 3-5), staff training (months 4-9), community education (months 6-10), and monitoring/evaluation (months 11-12).The project funds will be used for infrastructure renovations, ergonomic furniture, technological equipment, and specialized mental health tools. Rotary Club members will play a key role in project management, fundraising, monitoring progress, and leading community engagement activities. This initiative will benefit over 21,000 people, ensuring sustainable improvements in mental health care, professional capacity, and community well-being.
