Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and treatment, Community economic development
This global grant seeks to provide community-managed revolving loans to women from families that have been affected by the devastating earthquake, which struck Nepal on 25 April, and that are part of an ongoing holistic community development project in Chandi-Bhanjyang village of Chitwan District. The grant will also be used to fund specific components of the community development project being implemented by the Rotary Club of Patan (RCP) and Heifer Project Nepal (HPN).
The RCP first began working in the village of Chandi-Bhanjyang in May 2008 through the provision of mid-day meals to students of the Devibhanjyang Rastriya Primary School, but found that a more sustainable approach for the rural smallholder farmers was needed. Hence, the RCP decided to explore other avenues of support and approached Heifer Nepal, to include Chandi-Bhanjyang in its program plan for 2014-2018.
In 2014, the RCP and Heifer Nepal, initiated a project that took a holistic community development approach to improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Chandi-Bhanjyang. The project model involves donating livestock, providing training on organic vegetable farming, and introducing improved animal management technologies. The initial group of families receiving livestock, will then 'Pass On the Gift' (POG) of their first female offspring to another family and share their acquired knowledge. Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are also formed, which evolve into Social Entrepreneur Women (SEW) cooperatives to manage micro-funds and economic activities linking production with markets. Through this approach, communities can achieve self-reliance and break the cycle of hunger and poverty within a short span of three to four years.
The post-earthquake recovery community-managed revolving loan component of the project was designed to complement the goals of the larger holistic community development project. Women already participating in the project will have access to additional financing for income-generating activities that will help their families to recover and rebuild in a fast and sustainable way. The revolving loans will assist in particular those women from families most affected by the earthquake to cope with the devastating impacts and revive their livelihoods. The women will only need to start paying back the loan after 24 months and will have up to 36 months to complete the repayment. The Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will manage and oversee the fund repayment and management. The funds will remain with the Women Self-Help Groups for future credit support and formation of a community cooperative.
