The benefitting community is the Mpererwe Township of Kampala, Uganda. This catchment area encompasses a radius of about 10 Km. The parishes included Kanyanya, Kawempe II, and Komamboga.

There are several health needs identified for the local community including acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, hypertension and HIV related complications. There are also preventative services that need to be provided including oral health issues, antenatal care and preventative services such as immunizations to children. Reproductive health education to reduce maternal mortality rate, spread of HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Limiting the spread of vector borne diseases with emphasis on malaria.

St. Stephen's Hospital has worked in conjunction with the Uganda Medical Bureau and the Uganda Ministry of Health to help meet these needs through government grants. They have also received support from the Rope Trust Charitable Fund, the St. Cuthbert Presbyterian Church in Canada and the Rotary Club of Kololo.

This Global Grant will be in the area of health care enabling outreach, community health training, and, where needed, diagnostic and curative interventions, in the community served by St Stephen's Hospital. The needs have been identified through a community needs assessment conducted by the Rotary Club of Kampala North and St Stephen's Hospital where Dr. Catherine Nakibuule, a TRF almunus, is the Medical Superintendent (she is a recent member of the GSE Team from District 9200). This will assist the hospital in providing in-patient and out-patient care as well as health education for the local area. The beneficiaries would be the residents of the catchment area of St. Stephen's Hospital. St. Stephen's Hospital was founded in 1987 and has become an established health care provider to the community. This included 11,395 out-patient visits and 1055 in-patient visits in 2009. The benefit to the community is the improved ability to provide health care and education.

The local community has been involved with St. Stephen's Hospital with outreach programs, teachers and parents of various community schools working to promote health among school children. The St. Stephen's Hospital Women's Group has the aim of improving the socioeconomic status of women in and around Mpererwe including 8 heifers given out and 150 fruit trees planted to needy families.

This Global Grant would also provide for diagnostic equipment, 40 in-patient beds, 4 computers, pulse oximeters and other equipment needed for patient care.
