The proposed matching grant is for the purpose of providing much needed equipment and supplies to the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital.
Mulago Hospital in Kampala has recently added a surgical program that will provide cardio vascular surgery for children from age one to seventeen. This program requires proper equipment to enable the doctors and staff to diagnose and surgically treat these children when necessary. Some of the equipment that is needed has been identified by the hospital staff on the advice of doctors who have headed surgical missions to the hospital.
There is a need to develop an on going pre and post natal counseling program including diet and proper proper nutrition to prevent the problem from becoming more critical.
Visiting surgical teams are slated to come to the hospital this year to provide additional training in pediatric cardiovascular care. The hospital community will be involved in the establishment and implementation of a functional Pediatric Cardiovascular program. Local surgeons will be able to perform additional surgeries on children thereby gaining added experience. This will bring additional revenue to the hospital from paying patients.
The Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital, Gift of Life District 9200, Gift of Life 5340 Foundation and Gift of Life International will all continue their involvement in the region.
There have been Rotarian based Gift of Life projects in Uganda for many years such as missions to operate on children. Because of their commitment the Pediatric Cardiovascular program at Mulago Hospital has significantly expanded in the past year.
