This project will benefit villages in the vicinity of the town of Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu, Fiji. Villagers on Vanua Levu obtain water from catchments the volcanic outcroppings, from streams and from rooftop collection. All these sources of water are frequently contaminated with dangerous bacteria including typhoid and leptospirosis.

This project provides provides individual households within a village the capability (both in equipment & training) to filter their own water from village existing sources to achieve over 99.9% removal of all pathogens. It also provides filters to schools and clinics to ensure villagers have comprehensive access to disease-free water. An MOU with the Fiji Ministry of Health is in place to assure long term sustainability.

A memorandum of understanding was established between Rotary and Give Clean Water (GCW) non-profit. GCW will provide the project with Sawyer 0.1 micron filters to significantly reduce the cost of the Safe Water Stations, resulting in more impact on the Savusavu, Fiji community. Based on this contribution, hardware and parts will be purchased and shipped within the next few months.

2-Dec-17

by Debra Gookin

Lumber and parts for 300 Safe Water Stations were purchased and the Rotary Club of Point Loma cut and painted the pieces. The pre-fabricated stands were shipped to Fiji and assembled by the Rotary Club of Savusavu. On October 26, 2017 the Fiji Ministry of Health facilitated a "train the trainers" session in Wailevu Village where village nurses (Community Health Workers) were trained to teach their communities about water and sanitation and correct use of the Safe Water Stations. As of December 2, 2017 over 100 Safe Water Stations have been deployed in Wailevu, Naloaloa and Dreketi villages. Families in each village were trained and signed agreements in exchange for the Safe Water Stations.

18-Jun-18

by Debra Gookin

Safe Water Stations were deployed to 293 homes and schools. This completed our committment to the Fiji Ministry of Health objective to comprehensively provide disease-free water to all the villages in the Nabalebale Nursing District, serving over 3000 Fijians. The Fiji Ministry of Health identified another district with a dire need for water filtration to be addressed within this project.
