Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The project will provide five water purification systems to provide clean water for drinking, food preparation,in 27 small Andean villages and five schools. The systems are composed of both sand and activated charcoal filters for the raw water that is dosed automatically with disinfectant agents such as calcium hypochlorite with a metering diaphragm. We will also install a backwash system in the village Andoas. The five water systems will go to schools and communities with a total of 113 students and 10,645 community inhabitants. The backwash system will benefit 3,000 residents.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The schools and villages have a complete absence of public potable water supply. The inhabitants must must utilize raw water that has become contaminated by human, animal and other contaminates upstream from the villages. Their are serious gastrointestinal problems, especially among the children. The villages and schools also use non potable water.

There is low educational performance resulting partially from absence due to illness caused by waterborne pathogens.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Water is delivered in trucks, buckets or pipes from nearby revers, streams or ponds. Some water is fetched manually by women in the community directly from water sources. Water can be made potable by boiling or adding chemicals.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

The primary goal is to lessen illness caused by contaminated water.

The Rotary Club of Quito Norte has installed over eighty water projects in more than 100 separate locations since 2006. The actives involve determining the locations, engineering review, site selections, design, construction of a casita for equipment, purchase of materials, construction of filters, installation of equipment, testing of equipment and official delivery to local committee.

This will provide a potable water system to the community, sized to their current needs.

Properly operated and maintained the community should enjoy potable water for at least 10 years and probably longer.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

N/A

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The local people along with the Rotary Club of Quito Norte will be providing labor and materials valued at $10,000 In addition to some materials the local community will be responsible for the construction of the equipment casita.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

Yes, an agreement has been signed between the legal entity of the area (local authority) and the Rotary Club of Quito Norte. This document outlines the responsibility of each party and transfers ownership of the system to the local authority. Copies of these documents will be posted in a public location near the water equipment for reference.

5. Proposed Start Date: 1-OCT-2015

6. Proposed Completion Date: 31-JAN-2016

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

The primary goal is to provide clean water to the communities and schools. This goal will be addressed by the installation of water purification equipment. Providing equitable community access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene will strengthen the ability of the communities to develop, fund and maintain a sustainable water system. Supporting programs will enhance the communities awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Providing safe drinking water at the villages and schools will lessen the gastrointestinal diseases allowing them to attend work and school more regularly.

The day of the official delivery of drinking water systems, we have a meeting with an important number of residents, at which we read the rules of hygiene and drinking water use. We provide each resident attending the meeting with written information on this issue.

More than one hundred drinking water systems have been installed by the Rotary of Quito Norte in conjunction with the company, SEHICOCI, our contractor. In all projects, the contractor has given talks on the care and proper use of drinking water, prevention of infections from contamination of water sources and standard rules of hygiene. This enables the inhabitants to change their way of life on the positive side (health and food). Besides brochures, posters and a multi-media CD on the proper use of drinking water is delivered.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

The provision of potable water for drinking, bathing and food preparation throughout the identified schools and villages.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

The contractor will give training to at least three members of each community in the management of the drinking water system to ensure that the equipment is operated and maintained correctly. The contractor will also be accessible to that community on an ongoing basis in order to resolve technical concerns.

Community members will receive appropriate training from the contractor on how to operate the equipment and how to maintain it. Spare or replacement parts are available for purchase in the local market or from the contractor.

As mentioned before, at the time of delivery, the project documents will be signed by the Rotary Club of Quito Norte and each of the communities and education centers in which beneficiaries are committed to the care and maintenance of equipment and the civil works.

For installation of projects of drinking water, the contractor will give oral and practical training operation to at least three people chosen by the community at each site to ensure that the equipment is used properly and preventive maintenance is provided to ensure that projects are in operation all the time.

After a year of Warranty, the villages and schools will handle the costs of operation and maintenance of treatment systems. The contractor warrants that a permanent stock of spare parts is available for immediate assistance. To facilitate communication with the users of the installed system, a sticker will be provided with the necessary information such as phone number, email address, etc.

The operating cost is quite low. It is paid by all members of the communities as well as the repairs that have to be made one year after the equipment is installed. Technical support will be provided by the contractor.

The communities and schools will own the equipment and facilities of the drinking water system.
