Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Githunguri Primary School, the hub of the foreseen project, is located about 45 kilometers north of Nairobi city. It is one of the oldest primary schools in the area, set up in the early 1960's . At one time it had a popilation of nearly 2,000 students but today it has less than about 400 students, drawn largely from the very needy and deserving community around it. Most of these people in the community live on less than a dollar a day and have families to feed. The same community is largely affected by the HIV/AIDS scourge that swept much of the continent in the last couple of decades. The school is dilapidated and lacks basic amenities and students therefore end up performing poorly and feeding the vicious cycle of poverty.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The school and the community around it lacks basic amenities such as clean water, food, proper shelters and food. Most families have a single parent, mainly mothers due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The infrastructure in and around the school is very poor with dilapidated classrooms, broken up and poor toilet facilities, unusable playground and lack of sufficient potable water. Most parents and/or guardians earn their living trading in second-hand clothing or selling basic food crops on the roadside. They have no access to mainstream bank credit.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

There is very little done by the government to provide resources. No other NGO or party is working on this school. We have identified parents and/or guardians of the students of the school to form a Rotary Community Corps (RCC).

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

The Rotary Club of Karura will work with the RCC and the school administration to oversee the project. The project will involve enhancing the capacity of a shallow well, erecting water tanks to harvest rain water, and provide/pipe water to the school and the community around it. The community will provide part of the labor required as their contribution, establishing ownership of the project. We will construct hygienic toilets located to avoid spoiling the playground. We will hold a Family Health Day to popularise the project and enhance the image of Rotary.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

None of the co-operating organization (for example the ministry of Education)or the community is foreseen to contribute to the financing of the project. The community will however contribute part of the free labor.

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The surounding community will get water from the school's rehabilitated well and in return they will oversee the upkeep of the equipment and facilities provided under this grant. The school will provide a central point for the RCC and other community activities such as sports.

Parents of the needy students will be formed into a Community Based Organisation (CBO) and will get access to micro-credit loans under this grant which they will themselves manage. The Rotary Club of Karuara will oversee the micro-credit scheme and provide the CBO with a link to the mainstream banking system.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

Yes- the local community and the school leadership were visited in June 2011 by the Rotarians of Rotary Club of Karura and the District Governor 2011-12, Eric Kimani and confirmed their willingness. Another meeting is planned in August.

5. Proposed Start Date: 1-OCT-2011

6. Proposed Completion Date: 31-MAY-2012

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[  ]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[X]

Disease prevention and treatment

[X]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[X]

Basic education and literacy

[X]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

The provision of portable water and the reconstruction of usable and hygienic toilets will address Water and Sanitation and by extension help also prevent disease. The Family Health Day(s), will address disease prevention and treatment. The rehabilitation of the school facilities (library, grounds, etc.) and the provison of books will address Basic Education and Literacy. The micro-creditloans will empower the parants and/or guardians toward self-sustainance in the future.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

The work on the library, playgrounds, toilets and sanitation will help the students get a better education and fight illiteracy. Clean water will enhance literacy and disease prevention. The community of parents/guardinas too will benefit from clean water which will help prevent many water-borne diseases. The micro-credit loans will empower the parents/guardians to keep the students in school and hence improve performance and literacy levels and ultimately break the vicious cycle of poverty.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

Because the community through the RCC and the CBO will be beneficries both directly and indirectly of the project they will feed back the benefit into their families and the students. The economic empowerment through micro-credit loans will help many break the vicious poverty cycle and also train them on savings and financial planning. They will enable them to migrate into mainstream banking. The community will also be charged with oversight over the running of the water and the school grounds. They will charge maintainace fees for the water supply and user fees for the playgrounds and the money will be used for maintainance. The RCC and the CBO will become agents of positive change in the community and beyond.
