Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Machakos County boarders Nairobi (capital city, Kenya) and has many School Districts (Zones). We have selected Mutituni Zone and nearby Zones. This zone is 1.5 hours south and south east of Nairobi, Kenya. The population is 46,000 with over 90% practicing peasant farming as their economic activity. They mostly grow corn, beans for family use and limited coffee. Crop failure is extremely common since they depend on perennial rains. The climate has two spotty rain season and dry seasons. The terrain is mainly plains with occasional hilly (Mua Hills) sections between 1800m to 2400m, as a section of the Athi / Kaviti plain. The communities are spread into villages (USA=Neighborhoods), with more than 50 villages. Mutituni School Zone has 13 Secondary Schools (USA=high school) with 5681 students (2272 girls and 3409 boys). There are 23 Primary schools (USA= Elementary and Middle school combined) with 8053 students (4704 girls and 3349 boys). One major notation is this region has produced several world class runners including a two time winner of Boston Marathon.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Lack of clean drinking water & lack of sanitation at the schools. Metuma Kamuthanga village water committee approached a member of El Cajon Breakfast Rotary Club to assist in rehabilitating a non functioning community water project in 1997. The two groups jointly did needs assessment over a period of time, water need was ranked number one with health clinic and economic needs closely ranked. Additional Studies were conducted by volunteer from County of San Diego Environmental

Service and a student from SDSU Masters in Public Health to access and analyze water and sanitation. The villages and Metuma Kamuthanga Water Committee, established that clean water and safe sanitation be addressed in all the schools in the zone. There are 13 secondary schools and 23 primary schools with 13734 total students.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

There are no local resources for clean water so children bring contaminated water in the morning and/or must take a break from school to fetch water from local streams and ponds as a temporary solution. Government agencies are stretched thin and can only deal with teacher wages and textbooks and are unable to address dilapidated, unserviceable latrines.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

The Global Grant would tackle the sanitation problem that has not been delt with and improve lack of water. Metuma Kamuthanga Village Water Committee and Parent‐Teacher Association have selected 10 schools with the most dilapidated and unserviceable latrines and 10 Schools with no water. The proposed activity will install at each of the 10 schools two latrines & wash basin for girls, two latrines & wash basin for boys. Another 10 schools will receive water tanks only. The water tank system provides a 6000 litter tanks, foundation base, gutters, down spout, low pressure filtration system and utilizes existing roof tops at the 10 selected schools. The latrine and wash basin come as complete assembled units. The school district zone has an enrollment of over 14,000 students. Concurrently, the wash basin would remove the necessity for girls to be absent from school during their menses and latrine would provide environmentally safe sanitation. Clean water tanks should greatly reduce water‐borne illnesses.

The intended beneficiaries for tanks/sanitation stations:

Yakamete; Metuma, Kwa Kitaa; Kamuthanga; Ngelani; Kisekini; Kyanda; Kyasila; Keaa; Mua Farm

The intended beneficiaries for tanks only:

Muthwani Primary; Muthwani Secondary; Kwa Mboo; Mutituni;, Kithima; kingongoi; Thinu; Kyaani; Ngomeni Secondary; Kasovya.

Benefit to the community: Fewer sickness & death due to water‐borne diseases. Improved hygiene and health through clean water access, safe sanitation and increased class room time for students to further their education. A healthy educated child is the future of Africa in helping their family and village prosper.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

Metuma‐Kamuthanga Village Water Committee

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Village Water Committee will provide ongoing maintenance and guarantee of the project’s success. The local village members will provide unskilled labor to assist in installing the water tanks and wash basins.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

A resounding yes. Metuma Kamuthanga Village Water Committee and the Parent‐teacher Organizations have conducted survey, water and sanitation analysis studies. The results culminated with an urgent need for water and sanitation to be addresses immediately at all the school.

5. Proposed Start Date: 7-JUL-2010

6. Proposed Completion Date: 30-JUN-2011

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[  ]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[  ]

Disease prevention and treatment

[X]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[  ]

Basic education and literacy

[  ]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

Water tank system will provide clean water to 10 schools and eliminate the need for children to fetch contaminated water from ponds and streams. Clean water will have an overall reduction of unnecessary deaths from water born diseases. Safe sanitation will address a very serious problem that affects hygiene, the environment, student safety and ability for girls to obtain equal education as boys.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

Immediate goal: clean drinking water in an area hard hit by drought. Improved hygiene and availability of environmentally safe sanitation. Improved attendance for young girls and increased for study time for all students.

Long term goal: Availability of clean water, improved health and reduction in malnutrition. There has been a significant drop in water borne diseases e.g. typhus. This was dramatically demonstrated when one school informed WCA they had noticed a significant drop in typhus over a 2 year period since two water tanks were installed in the school.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

The water tanks, wash basin are low maintenance, non‐corrosive plastics which are designed to last 30 years (30 year warranty provided). The Nairobi Rotary club will continue to oversee the project to completion; Metuma Kamuthanga Village Water Committee will continue to maintain the sites and assure security together with parent‐teacher organizations. There is no training involved and any defects are reported to the manufacture for corrections.
