Section B: Community Needs

1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

Children peace initiative (CPI) Kenya works with pastoralist communities that engage in inter ethnic rivalry in Northern parts of Kenya.

CPI Kenya is currently implementing peace program with Children in the Counties of Samburu and Marsabit. The county of Samburu is located in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It covers an area of about 21,000 km2 with a population of 223,947. The county is semi arid in nature with a contribution to the National Livestock Industry. Main economic activities in Samburu are Livestock keeping, Pastoral farming and Agricultural farming. Insecurity and cattle rustling remains a big challenge both for the residents as frequent raids have left many injured or maimed. In the County of Samburu the project targets the Samburu, Turkana and Pokot Communities.

Marsabit is an administrative County in the Eastern Province of Kenya. It is a vast county covering approximately 12% of Kenya, with variable landscape and climate and a population estimated at 291,166 persons (Kenya census 2009) in an area of 66, 923.11 km2 . The County is mainly inhabited by mobile pastoralists groups who rely on livestock as their main source of livelihood. In the County of Marsabit CPI Kenya works with Turkana, Gabra, Rendille, Borana, Dasanach and Samburu ethnic groups.

2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The identified community needs include: Water, transportation system, health care facilities, feeding program for schools and inclusive approach for conflict resolution and peace building. This grant application focues on conflict resolution and peace building, which will make implimentation of solutions for the other community needs much more feasible.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The above needs are addressed by various actors which include churches, CBOs, NGOs and the government. The government takes part in road construction and provision of health care facilities. The church participates in road repair by directly engaging the local community. In addition, the church also provides health care services. Some of the local NGO’s have water programs where they drill boreholes and buy tanks for the households in the community. On issues regarding peace, the church and other NGO’s engage different members (men, women and youth) of the community in peace processes. CPI-Kenya approaches inter-community peace by engaging children in conflict transformation process.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

The project encompasses series of peace activities that target the children and their parents. Proposed activities include:

Children Peace Camps -- This is a children centered project involving team building exercises, fun and value games, reflection on conflict and peace and cultural exchange. It is an ice breaking forum for children experiencing animosity between their people.

Friendship for Peace pairing -- Two or more Children from neighboring ethnic groups are matched to become friends for the sake of peace between their people.

Peace exchange programs -- A school based holiday activity that targets children who are members of friendship for peace. Children learn together and interact with immediate family and the community of host friends.

Family pairing for Peace -- This is a forum for parents and children that take part in friendship for peace movement. Children introduce their parents to each other and encourage them to support their friendship.

Peace campaigns -- Peace festivals done with songs, poems and skits on the themes of peace and conflict and child centered peace caravan.

The proposed activities are intended to contribute to improved security and enable the target communities to co-exist peacefully. It will reduce the rate of violent inter-ethnic conflict and minimize the loss of life and property; enhance productivity and boost household income. The project is intended to benefit 50,000 people that include children, parents, teachers, school management committees and other people who reside in the targeted areas and benefit from the prevailing peace.

2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies).

Children Peace Initiative Kenya is currently implementing peace programs for children with funding support from Cordaid. CPI Kenya is also working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, local schools and the Catholic Diocese of Maralal. The Diocese is working within the same community, but they target elders and peace committees in their approach.

3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The benefiting communities participate in planned peace activities. Teachers and community volunteers provide peace education to school children and continuously monitor the progress made by the community towards achieving peace by assessing the impact of peace activities. Children and the parents interact voluntarily by participating in the activities and by exchanging letters, gifts and by visiting each other in order to strengthen the bond of friendship. Parents support each other when unexpected incidents of conflict happen by communicating and cooperating in resolving conflict as they occur.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

CPI Kenya undertook a baseline survey to establish whether the project activities address the community needs. The community confirmed that the project is a need and they welcome the execution of the peace activities by CPI Kenya in their area. (They requested extension of the activities to other areas with similar issues.)

5. Proposed Start Date: 1-DEC-2012

6. Proposed Completion Date: 1-DEC-2013

Section D: Area of Focus

1. With which area(s) of focus is the proposed activity aligned?

[X]

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

[  ]

Disease prevention and treatment

[  ]

Water, sanitation and hygiene

[  ]

Maternal and child health

[  ]

Basic education and literacy

[X]

Community economic development

2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus.

The main goal of the project is to reduce vulnerability to conflict among pastoral communities in Marsabit and Samburu Counties by utilizing Children as potential agents of reconciliation and peace. The proposed peace activities shall increase inter-community interactions, foster a network for children, families and social institutions and increase children’s participation in inter-community reconciliation and peace enterprise.

Increased inter community interaction leads to improved contact and friendship. The community members will develop some understanding about their neighbors and clear negative perception about each other; eventually there will be acceptance and they will live together in peace.

Through enhanced peace in the community, economic advances will be achieved through decreased resource loss and cooperation for mutual community and economic development.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

Outcomes are adequately described above. Restated, these include:

1. Decrease conflict between communities

2. Increased peace and fear in the region

3. Increased friendship among the local communities

4. Increased cooperation for mutual community and economic development

Measurable outcomes will include monitoring the number of community raids by neighboring communities, monitoring the number of friend partnerships established that continue for more than 6 months and monitoring collaborations between communities.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

Friendship for peace is intended to be a self propelled process. Paired children and families become agents of reconciliation and peace between their community as they strive to build and sustain friendship between themselves. In addition they are motivated to intervene in any unexpected occurrence that might jeopardize peace between their communities and friendship between them because they are emotionally attached to each other. Consequently, members of the friendship for peace can sustain the outcome of the peace process.

By providing peace education and maintaining peace clubs, children have more avenues for interaction and thus schools contribute to the sustainability of the outcome of the peace process.

Parents also take the friendship between themselves to another level by engaging in social economic activities that include cross-breeding of animals and exchanging of goods and services at the peace markets. The benefits target communities achieve from each other will serve to sustain the outcome of peace activities.
