The Rotary Club of Dar Es Salaam has embarked on the Jaipur Foot project, under which artificial legs are provided to amputees who have lost their legs as a result of accidents, disease, snake bites, civil strifes, wars, land mines, etc.
The Jaipur foot was originally developed in early 1970s in the Indian city of Jaipur to provide a practical but an inexpensive limb suitable for the lifestyle led by a largely rural or urban population in developing countries. The Jaipur limb allows a person to walk or run, on either smooth or uneven ground, whether it is wet or dry. It also allows the person to sit cross-legged, squat, kneel, ride a bicycle, push a hand cart, or even climb a tree. It is suitable for men, women or children of all ages.
A Jaipur limb will help a person to regain his mobility, human dignity and self-respect. The person will be able to resume his job or vocation and make his proud contribution towards nation building.
On an average, it costs $125 to provide one Jaipur limb. This cost is inclusive of all transport, boarding and lodging necessary for people coming from outside Dar Es Salaam. This grant is writen for 80 limbs, but it can be modified for bigger or smaller amounts depending on the contributions we will get. |
