The Mugwanya Summit College is located 9km from Kampala. It is almost centrally located between four very big and expensive secondary schools. This school serves the rural peasant students who are usually unable to meet the costs and other requirements, and many of whom are orphans due to the current AIDS/HIV problem in the country.
Mugwanya Summit College was started in 1994 with an enrollment of 60 students. The fees per term have been unchanged since 1994, at $30 for day scholars and $90 for for boarders, which is extremely low for the country. Some students cannot even afford to pay at all, but the school handles needy students by allowing contributions in food or community service.
Currently, the scholl has 5 classroom blocks with 12 rooms, main hall, one laboratory (without equipment), a small library, and a kitchen. The school enrolment is 1200 students of which 590 students are boarders. 240 of these are orphans. The age group is between 12-19 yrs. The population of the girls is 60%. The school has a staff of 45 teachers and 10 non-teaching staff.
The school needs a computer lab to start teaching computer science to the students.
This grant will provide 20 desktop computers, Intel Celeron 700 Mhz, 128 RAM, mouse, keyboard, speakers, modem at $389 each, 20 15" monitors at $125 each, and an HP printer at $299. The rest of the budget will cover tax ($826), packaging ($975) and shipping ($2,460). |
