   New Zealand - Hokianga

Maori Carving Vocational Ctr

$17,150

Maori Carving Vocational Center Hokianga,NZ

In the Hokianga area, with high unemployment, the Motuti Marae (village) is developing tourism while maintaining respect for their cultural heritage. Traditional Maori carving is both an art form and a means of retaining their history... however no carving is being done at this time. This grant will provide the expensive equipment for multiple stations to teach carving in wood, bone and greenstone (jade). The primary purpose of this grant is to retain the artform that will be lost if not passed down to the next generation. Once trained, young artisans will be able to demonstrate the craft to visitors and eventually develop souvenir sales.
