The Nanoman Kpone-Bawaleshie Community is located at the rural north-eastern part of the Tema Municipality. It is a small rural poor peasant farming community with an estimated population of 1,500 inhabitants. The population comprise largely of an indigenous Ga-Dangme tribe. The predominant occupation is peasant farming with a few of the residents doing petty trading. Apart from a nursery school, the children attend school at the nearby Community Oyibi about 3km away for their basic education. The Community is served by one public toilet which was constructed by the Local Assembly.
The Community has as its source of drinking water untreated streams and ponds which are shared with livestock thereby contracting water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, bilharzia and guinea worm.
The specific need of the Nanoman Community is the provision of potable water. The borehole which will be drilled and constructed will be connected with pipes to water tank reservoirs with a capacity of about 10,000 gallons of water and linked to the Oyibi Area Water Scheme at Saduase. Water will be pumped into the reservoir and then distributed to the Nanoman community for a minimal fee in order to self finance water treatment chemicals, repair works and maintenance of the facility. The water will be pumped directly from the borehole in Saduase to the beneficiary Community twice daily – 3 hours in the morning and another 3 hours in the evening. This is because people are usually at home during these periods. The rationale for linking the Scheme to the Oyibi Area Water Scheme at Saduase is because boreholes which were attempted in the Communities closer to the coast were saline and therefore could not be used.
The borehole project when executed is expected to achieve certain objectives.
• Firstly it would provide the Nanoman Community with potable water.
• This will intend reduce drastically if not prevent water-borne diseases in the Community.
• It would also improve hygiene and further enhance the local economy because with fewer diseases affecting the residents, more time would become available for them to go about their businesses.
• Productivity will increase
• Incomes would improve since less money would be used to cure diseases.
• The improved incomes would ultimately be channeled into the education of their children and there would be a general improvement in their living conditions and lifestyle thus alleviating poverty
• The execution and completion of this borehole will project the image of Rotary within the Community and the Tema Municipality. |
