   Lithuania - Kaunas

Vans for Special Service

$19,630

Our Volunteer Service Grant (July 2007) allowed us to assess needs in Kaunas, Lithuania. This MG will serve two sites that assist underserved populations in Lithuania: 1) children with special needs and 2) those recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. 1) The Vilijampole Children and Youth Boarding Home, a facility for children with special needs, has staff and volunteers who serve a significant number of child residents. Staff currently use personal vehicles and one van to transport supplies, take residents on educational field trips, transport staff and volunteers for training, and bring in much-needed special education consultants. The van is not equipped to transport child residents who have physical disabilities and/or wheelchairs. 2) An alcohol an drug treatment facility -- Pilnu namu bendruomene ("Full House Community") -- is one of the few successful facilities operating in the country, and is purposely located in isolation to prevent distraction. Its isolation is detrimental in transporting supplies, taking residents on field trips or performing necessary proactive educational outreach on addiction to the community. We propose 1) to adapt the Vilijampole Home's van for handicapped residents, and 2) to purchase a previously owned van for Pilnu Namu Bendruomene.
